Purpose of the Assessment

The purpose of this assessment is to assest the students on how their skills have been developing. Kindergarten students are known to have short attention span so using multiple choice and true false or happy/sad faces will keep their attention.  During the assessment, I will read all questions and choices so they can have the full opportunity to answer the questions properly. The essay question I chose for my kindergarten class is to write two sentenceson what a lion looks like in the wild describing its features, their color, if they are big or small, the kind of food they may eat. The second part of the essay question will ask the students where could a lion live. I gave them the beginning of the sentence, and they are to complete the sentence in their own words by sounding out the words on their own. True and false, or in my case happy and sad faces are short “modifies the materials, and scoring is easier”( Kubiszyn & Borich 2010, pp154). This test will allow me to monitor how the students may be processing the sounds by their answers.

Using multiple choice, and happy face/sad face questions will help to build the students confidence in testing. Multiple choice, though can be a handicap to the student can be easy to grade and for the purpose of this test, students should be able to differentiate between different beginning sounds to "weed out" the correct answers. Kubiszyn & Borish states that multiple choice questions enable you to measure behavior on the higher levels of taxonomy (pp 139) for this instance it is a good choice for a test for kindergartners.
